Richard Dawkins’ book The Magic of Reality: How We Really Know What’s True is a no-brainer for younger generations who want an easy start to a scientific viewpoint. The book answers questions that a young person could have about physics, chemistry, biology, and cosmology. The responses develop with a dense yet curiously exquisite complexity, even though the queries appear naively basic or originate from young minds. In different aspects, culture has been integrated into the mythologies in the book, however, without discretely pinpointing them. This leaves readers to assess the constructs of culture and how it manifests in “The Magic of Reality .”Culture involves a pattern of human influence and the representational frameworks that give these actions meaning and purpose. Cultures can be conceived as frameworks of symbolic representations that even their creators’ questions that have no set borders are continuously in flux and engage and contend with one another. Culture is defined as all of a population’s manner of living, encompassing arts, beliefs, and institutions that are handed down from generation to generation. It can also be described as a whole society’s way of existence. The “Magic of Reality” takes a scientific belief into various formations and existence.
Description of Culture and how it Affects Characters in the Book
Dawkins’ motivation for producing this book was to teach audiences that in response to the questions using contemporary science reasoning, they must first understand what the solutions cannot be: magical wizardry. Dawkins firmly dismisses such theories as to the type of delusional thinking that is so harmful to scientific discovery since it prevents further research, giving equal weight to Greek, Egyptian, and Judeo-Christian tales. Each chapter follows this pattern, with jargon-free scientific explanations followed by hilarious examinations of what various myths have informed us about a given topic. First, we explore the beliefs and dynamics of nature, particularly how things happen or why they happen the way they do. Dawkins proceeds from evolution to rainbows and earthquakes and then to a subject readers may not expect him to address. Macuglia (2012) illustrates why horrible things happen, one of the toughest topics a parent can have with their kids. There does not appear to be a simple solution. Bad individuals fire their employees and get grotesquely wealthy; good people acquire cancer and die early. For millennia, philosophers have struggled with this issue. Dawkins gives it his best shot, sticking to the scientific approach that had benefited him so well in the previous chapters. He illustrates, Bad things happen because things happen. Whether they are bad or good from our point of view doesn’t influence how likely it is that they will happen. Some people find it hard to accept this. With this belief, people tune their psychological awareness around nature, adapting to practices that bring peace to their minds. For instance, Dawkins illustrates that sick pilgrims slept in temples dedicated to Asclepius for healing or the manifestation of cure through dreams in ancient Greece.
Secondly, audiences get to observe religion. Genesis chapters six through nine tell the account of Noah and his Ark. God has grown dissatisfied with man and has decided to destroy his creation and begin again. He picks Noah and his family as the people who survived because they had shown no signs of the moral depravity he had grown tired of. He tells him to take two of every species on board his Ark. Noah was given ample notice, and one imagines he approached his mission with the zeal of a modern-day survivalist. The floodwaters arrived, killing all of the people who had enraged the god and all other living creatures who could not survive underwater. Casting aside the immorality of eradicating entire species since a single one has failed, individuals are psychologically affected by developing a mindset or objection towards conduct or morality. Mitchell (2012) shows that Audiences have a prime illustration of what Dawkins is referring to here. The germ hypothesis of disease was not recognized until the 1700s, and viruses were identified a few decades later. If they had been discovered sooner, or if the Bible had been written later, the account of Noah and his Ark would almost certainly have been told differently. God would not have swamped the earth and wiped off the majority of life but would have produced something similar to HIV. The following notion would have been just as wicked, but at a minimum, it would have been limited to humans.
Thirdly, do people believe in the supernatural? Aliens? Is there anything supernatural going on? There is something magnificent about having faith in something, even if we will never know with certainty if it exists or not. On the other hand, declaring anything supernatural denies us the opportunity to learn something as beautiful: how it truly, scientifically, works. Most events can be described using a combination of physics, chemistry, math, and logic, and the simple explanation is frequently more elegant than even the most bizarre mythology. To begin, Dawkins takes us through the supernatural magic, which may be encountered in myths and fictitious stories such as Harry Potter’s wizardry world. Second, stage magic consists of tricks done by magicians that are kept secret for their profession’s discretion or deceptive reasons for fraud in fields such as mindreading and fortune-telling. Finally, poetic magic, which we use to characterize something exceedingly beautiful and spectacular as magical,’ with examples such as sunsets, mountain scenery, and rainbows under dark skies (McCartney, 2012). With supernatural magic, the author reassures his readers of their youth before abruptly destroying its magnificence with the obvious, “but we all know this kind of magic is just fiction and does not happen in reality.” This emphasizes how characters perceive the abstract nature of supernatural magic and how indulging in it is a sign of immaturity.
Personal Take on Events in the Book
Even though the writing style is unaffected and accessible to high school students, Dawkins admits he does not know everything. However, he does a good job of explaining things using objective support. When that is impossible, he uses his intellectual authority to infer what is almost inevitably going on. In terms of context during an earthquake, for example, Dawkins tells young readers that seismic waves are not the consequence of an outraged deity releasing its fury on the vulnerable due to Original Sin. He says that moving tectonic plates clash at fault lines, or vulnerable spots on the earth’s crust, causing earthquakes as they clash. “What is a Miracle,” the book’s concluding chapter, integrates David Hume’s skepticism of a recent case of a Virgin Mary apparition. The book’s unhurried pace helps audiences to slowly sink into the depths of Dawkin’s smart reasoning against a creator, while famed artist Dave McKean’s outstanding pictures keep them engrossed.
Dawkins gives readers the idea to ascertain the reality of things. There is a need to experience it with the human senses. If people can immediately experience anything with their senses, they know it is genuine. If our senses are not fine-tuned enough to perceive something specific, we can use scientific devices like observatories and lenses to help us see faraway galaxies and microscopic microbes. When conventional tools are insufficient, we can use sophisticated devices to identify what our senses cannot detect. We cannot sense the past, and we cannot investigate it with sophisticated instruments. However, we can rely on circumstantial evidence. Take, for instance, fossils. Mineral-rich water seeps through a cadaver buried in mud and rock, forming fossils. The minerals consolidate there, substituting the molecules of the carcass and creating an impression of the animal in the stone. We will never see dinosaurs in reality, but we can see their fossils!
Also, Dawkins’s illustrations of evolution denote the gradual evolution of species into new species. I seem to agree with this conviction totally. Members of a species are not all the same. Each person has unique characteristics, many of which are advantageous for existence. Some frogs, for instance, have longer legs than others in their genus. This may allow them to live longer and generate more progeny than other types of frogs. The survival of these longer-legged frogs will imply that more frogs will have the gene for longer legs after a few cycles, increasing the likelihood of that gene being passed on. Natural selection, coined by Charles Darwin, is the process of selecting beneficial features. Natural selection can progressively transform a simple species into a very complex one given enough time.
Conclusion
Supernatural magic, such as that found in mythology and fairy tales, has frequently been used to interpret the nature of reality around us. The ancient Greeks explained the constant continuation of day and night as a god, Helios, driving the sun across the sky. Other legends attempted to explain the seasonal cycle and when and how everything originated. Notwithstanding their inventiveness, these magical tales were concocted to teach us exactly what we are trying to discover without offering any actual answers for the world we live in. Contrary to popular belief, science frequently consists of fragmentary and fragmented accounts. However, the kind of magic it can conjure is much more incredible than the tales told by our forefathers before the experimental method was developed.
