According to the article, the author states that most people are against abortion, and they base their argument on the fact that the fetus is a human being from the moment it is conceived. However, Judith state that there are circumstances in which one should be allowed to terminate the pregnancy. One of the common reasons is if the pregnancy will impose a risk on the baby’s mother.
The author argues that abortion should be allowed if the mother’s health is at risk. Suppose a woman is pregnant and learns that he has a cardiac condition and that she will die if she continues carrying the baby. Society assumes that they are both living things, and so they deserve to have equal rights in life.
Then, the author now argues that if both of them have the equal right to a living, why should it be that society chooses whom to live with. Why do they rule out that abortion is wrong (killing the Fetus) at the mother’s expense? In that case, where everybody has equal rights, should the fact that the mother has the right to choose what happens to her body be included
Most people argue that carrying out an abortion would directly kill the Fetus while letting the mother carry it would not kill her but let her die. Additionally, they state that killing a child would be killing an innocent creature who has committed no crime. There are four significant ideas used in defence of this, and these include;
Abortion is directly killing a person, and that is not allowed. Secondly, killing a person directly is murder, and that is impermissible. Moreover, the duty to keep one from directly killing another person (Fetus) is more severe than the duty of keeping a person from dying hence not performing an abortion. Also, if people are given an option of directly killing a person or dying, they should let the person die.
Due to the arguments, the author states that if directly killing a person is murder, then letting the mother die and thereby killing the Fetus directly should be counted as murder. Therefore, they say that if the mother performs an abortion to save her life, that should not be considered murder. This idea is not wrong because no one can sit and let herself die.
The major problem in society today is what a doctor should tell a woman when she requests an abortion. I say I agree with this because a woman cannot safely perform an abortion on herself. And in this case, denying the woman a chance to abort would be wrong since it would be letting the Fetus inside her crush her to death.
Let us take a case scenario where a woman and a small child are enclosed in a tiny room where they cannot survive. As each of them grows, the harder it becomes for them to survive. If the woman decides to kill the child to survive, that can be considered immoral as no one has the right to choose whom to survive. This is contrary to abortion, where the woman will be letting the Fetus crush her to death.
Therefore, they say that they are not claiming that people have the right to do anything they wish to save their lives. They, however, state that people can try the best they can to save themselves. If someone is threatened with death unless they kill someone else, then the person has no right to choose who to die. Whoever in abortion, the scenario is different whereby there are two people involved, one whose life is threatened and the other who threatens it. In this case, third parties should not be involved, and instead, the threatened should make the best decision for themselves.
Another argument that they say in the article is that the body belongs to the woman, and she, therefore, she has the right to choose what to do with it. A scenario is taken whereby two people live in a house, the mother (owner) and the baby. In this scenario, the third parties have no opinion on what the owner should do to their house, and the owner should have more power over the decision she decides to take.
Therefore, people should think if it is right to say that no one has the right to choose when the body that houses the baby belongs to the mother. It will be wrong not to appreciate this fact. However, despite the mother being the sole decision-maker, they may need the help of the doctors. So, as many third parties cannot influence the decision, they are needed in the process.
The third argument in defence of abortion is that everybody has the right to life. In this case, people may argue that an unborn child is also a person who has the right to live. However, the answer to this is that people should be given the right and conducive environment in which they can live in the right to life.
In this case, if the mother sees that keeping the baby will put her through a lot of strain that she cannot manage, she has the right to choose to abort the child. In some instances, the mother is a teenager with no job and no one to support her. Keeping the child will mean not being able to give the child the best life and even food which may even result in death.
I say I support the author in that there is no need to insist on keeping the baby that will later suffer or be affected due to poor maintenance. The mother will also be affected by the real struggle; therefore, both rights to life were denied. I, therefore, support the idea that the mother can choose to do what she thinks is best for her and the baby.
Another argument in support of abortion is that killing is only wrong if it is done unjustly. So the question stands of whether killing by abortion is unjust. Suppose a person was raped and got pregnant in return. In this instance, the person was forced to have the baby, and therefore it can be hard to state that the act of abortion was unjust.
The author of the article states that the choice regarding abortion depends on several factors. Firstly, if the pregnancy will impose a risk to the mother’s health, which may lead to death, then the mother can proceed and carry out an abortion. Additionally, the mother can choose what to do with her life. This includes choosing to keep the baby or abort it.
Moreover, third parties should respect the right to life. In this, the mother has the right to choose the best circumstances for her life, including abortion. This entails cases where the mother will not be able to feed and take care of the baby, affecting both her life and that of the baby.
