Truthfully, it does not strike but forces its way and threatens to leave one with nothing but suffering and heartache as a reminder of the particular tragedy. The events of that day are so fresh in my head as though it was yesterday. As I think about it today, I shiver at the thought of losing a loved one in that incident. That day made me realize and appreciate my loved ones no matter how estranged we might be and nature since it can either kill or save when it prevails. It was on the evening of the twelfth of December, 2014. My hands were cold and shivering as I unlocked my car door. I was slightly irritated that I had to pick up my sister, with who we were not on talking terms. I felt a strong breeze hit me as though it was God himself holding me from leaving. As I entered the car, I thought I was experiencing a dj vu, but I assumed I was having anxiety since I was meeting up with my older sister, whom I had not seen in over six months. I was on my way to pick her up from her office since our parents were expecting us for dinner that night. I had my dog Gabbana with me since we were from the Vets office, and my father wanted to spend the weekend with him since he was the family dog. At first, I was pretty reluctant to pick up my sister since we had had an argument earlier that month and had not been in communication for about four weeks. Still, I decided it was probably a good idea, and we would get time to resolve our argument before the dinner. I picked her up at 7 p.m. and headed to our parents.

The night was soundless, and there were few cars on the road, probably because it had been snowing a bit too much. To break the awkward silence in the car, I decided to turn on the radio and give my sister time to get comfortable before resolving our problems. As “Crazy Little Things Called Love” by Queen blasted on the radio, I remember thinking how great the weekend would be, especially since I had not seen my parents in months. I cruised along the pavements at 120 km/h, but things started getting weird when the car started making soft, annoying noises. My sister suggested we stop at the next filling station and have someone help us look for what was wrong. Then the drizzle of snow started, I thought it would probably stop before we got to the filling station, but it got worse. I could tell my sister had started getting worried, but I reassured her that I would get us home safely, a promise I probably should not have made.

Within an hour’s drive, the snow pellets had gotten larger and larger, and truthfully I was freaking out. I remember slowing down so I could reach for my gloves because my fingers were cold, and then suddenly, our car was hit from behind so hard that it twirled in the middle of the highway and hit a light post by the roadside. As the vehicle twirled, I thought to myself that that was it, that was the moment we would die as my sister was screaming out my name. I hit the side of my head on the window and bounced on the airbag, which exploded on the steering wheel due to the impact. I must have passed out for a few minutes because I remember opening my eyes to someone on my shouting, “She is awake! She awake! Call an ambulance.” I turned to see my sister bleeding from her forehead and left ear, and Gabbana’s leg was also bleeding.

A man among the good Samaritans who had come to help, helped us out of the car and sat us by the roadside as we waited for the ambulance. My nerves were popping out of my skin due to fright. My head was also bleeding due to hitting the window, and my arm hurt so badly. I turned to look at my sister. She was holding my dog, but she appeared shaken and sobbing uncontrollably. After a few minutes, the ambulance came, and we were given first aid. Thankfully none of us, including Gabana, sustained severe injuries. Thanks to the airbags, my sister had a cut on her forehead, which was not profound. Gabana had fractured his limb. My arm was fractured, and I had a cut on my forehead.

I remember thinking about how God had given me a second chance in life on my way to the hospital. I thought about how quickly things could change and how we would have died, I would have died mad at my sister, and she would ironically have been the last person I would have seen before my death. As time passed, the trauma of the incident got better, but it left scars that may take longer to heal. I randomly look at my dog as he paces around the house and think about how lucky we are. Since the events of that day, I have managed to perceive so many things in my life differently. Initially, I was hesitant to take significant steps in life and constantly struggled with self-doubt. But I decided to adapt to a new slogan of pushing myself even if there is a possibility of failure. At least I would have done my best and tried.

The relationship I had with my family has been dramatically affected by the events of that day, though positively. I was very distant from my family, which led to the constant rifts we had with my older sister, but things got better since I put in the effort. She took time to understand my personality and become more accommodative. People need to adapt to the habit of gratitude and appreciating life and situations even when all hope seems to be lost. It is also essential to understand there will always be sunshine at the end of the rain. My case might not have been brutal or as traumatic as some of the events others have witnessed or the stories we read in books or newspapers, but it was traumatic enough for my family and me to change the way we see life significantly.
